A Forgotten Cemetery.
In our attempt to find locations throughout the Sullivan County Area to investigate we stumbled across a tiny forgotten cemetery that lays forgotten behind a residential area.
Smack dab between the suburban houses and the local high school, lays this spooky cemetery of two tombstones long since forgotten and crumbled away by time.
The tombstones of Daniel & Martha Litts are toppled over and forgotten, tucked in behind building 5 of the Sleepy Hollow Development. According to Tom Rue's article; Who Cares About An Old Cemetery?; Daniel & Martha Litts' farmhouse once stood where the Monticello Airport used to be, but was tore down sometime around April 04, 2008.
Litts cemetery is in complete dissaray. Both the tombstones are toppled over and broken into peices-one of them completely shattered. It's blocked off by a sloppy grey wooden fence that is begining to rot away-we didn't dare put any pressure on it out of fear of it completely breaking apart. Within' the fence is a single tree, and the two tombstones laying flat against the ground in several peices. Among the peices of Daniel & Martha's stones is another stone that appeared to be a toppled over tombstone, however when our team lifted it up to see if there was any writing underneath it we found nothing but a blank piece of stone. This could have just been a marker from when they were first burried, or a part of a tombstone that was so weathered away time itself has forgotten it. We can't be sure.
However we have no plans on investigating this cemetery, since it's not in the best of areas. We figured we'd share this little tidbit of Sullivan County History with you all.
